CONTEMPORARY/MODERN

Dance category based on classical foundation (ballet technique) with also involving a sense of being grounded as opposed to floating in ballet, which is adding more freedom to the movement. It may or may not be performed to music, sounds or nothing at all except the counts or breath of the dancers. This category will also include the new commercial American contemporary styles, as seen in works by Mia Michaels, Sonya Tayeh and Erica Sobol.

Foundationals in the contemporary/modern dance: contract-release body work, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristics of modern dance.

For the teams to score higer points in the “dance technique” parameter in contemporary/modern category, performance needs to demonstrate proper body alignment and movement has to come from some of the foundational techniques suggested.

* If a routine is registered and performs in an incorrect discipline as declared by the judges, it will be judged by the rules of the discipline it was registered in and will then be moved to the correct discipline. There won’t be a deduction of points.
